Bloomsburg Falls to Top-Ranked Team in D-II Baseball
MILLEDGEVILLE, GA- The Bloomsburg University baseball team played a tough game against Georgia College and State University; the number one ranked team in NCAA Division II, but fell short losing 7-3.
Georgia College took an early lead scoring two runs in the first and a run in the third off Bloomsburg pitcher Ryan Sanders (Danville/ Danville). However in the top of the fourth, Bloomsburg cut the lead to 3-1 when Matt Robinson (York/ Red Lion) scored from second after an error by Georgia College first baseman Kyle Schisler. The Bobcats, however, put three more runs across the board in the bottom half of the inning putting them ahead 6-1. The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh when Georgia College pushed across another run to make the score 7-1.
However for the second straight game, the Huskies put together a ninth inning rally. With a runner on first and two outs in the ninth, Syril Kress (Littlestown/ Littlestown) blasted a two-run home run off Bearcats closer Jayson Bennett, who had not allowed an earned run in 15 innings pitched this season, to cut the lead to 7-3. Bennett would then get the final out to close out the game.
Robinson carried the Huskies both offensively and on the mound, going 2 for 2 with three walks and a run scored and pitching three innings of relief without allowing an earned run.
Georgia College improves to 21-3, while the Huskies fall to 2-9. The two teams will play again tomorrow at 3 p.m.
